Nay Varanbhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha, (NVLKNK), has been in the news since its trailer was posted online. More so, since Rekha Sharma (NCW) wrote a letter for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The NCW chief demanded that there be a halt to the “open circulation of sexually explicit material involving minors on Social Media Platforms”. He cited the fact that the trailer for Mahesh Manjrekar’s film contains explicit content and portrays minors and women in offensive ways.
Jayant Pawar’s Varanbhatloncha Ni Kon Nay Koncha is the inspiration for this crime-drama. The story centers on two teenage boys who escape their chawls in Mumbai and make their way into crime. Young Digya (Prem Dahradhikari), who has lost his father to a feared gangster, now wants to be a gangster and kill his father.
Iliyas (Varad Nagvekar) is his friend and he keeps him company during all his activities. As teenagers, they are constantly learning about the human body as well as human behavior. However, Digya’s grandmother, Chhaya Kadam, is the only one who can explain these things in a clear and concise manner.
These two were raised in poor financial and social conditions. There is little anyone can do for them, especially if they decide to follow the path of criminality, which eventually leads to death or prison.
There are glimpses of Manjrekar’s Vaastav (1999), and Lalbaug Parael (2010). These films also show the effects of Mumbai’s closure on the families of the workers and their involvement in criminal activities by the younger generation. Manjrekar even stated that these films complete his trilogy.
NVLKNK is a revenge crime-drama that tells a story with a strong plot. However, it has two problems: excessive titillation as well as gore. These two elements are not completely necessary in the film. However, it is a bit excessive.
Manjrekar, on his part has tried to hide the violence and explicit scenes. He doesn’t focus as much on the cause of the activity.
Quentin Tarantino-like approach is taken by the film, both in terms of violence and content, but also because of the non-linear treatment that it receives. It reveals more than it can hide making NVLKNK predictable.
